AUTHOR VISITS and ACTIVITIES for SCHOOLS BY JOANNIE MOSES
AUTHOR VISITS:
I present an Author Visit in which I talk about story inspiration, writing the manuscript, sharing ideas with an illustrator, publishing, and selling the books. I bring enlarged book pages to study and children’s illustrations the illustrator uses for inspiration. Preschool on up. (One Session).
WRITING ACTIVITIES:
- I like to start with reading my own short books – they are in rhyme. We pick a topic, problem, key characters, and write a poem/story together as a class. K on up. (Complete in one session).
- I give a brief reading. We choose the same items as above and write a fiction piece together as a class. I show them a sample book written and illustrated by third grade students. We brainstorm illustrating. They illustrate pages. Grade 3 on up. (More than one session). I only need to be present at the writing session.
- We pick a topic such as “Summer Fun” and brainstorm a poem as a class. K on up. (One session).
COMBO ACTIVITY:
I read my book I Am a Creature of the Sea, Come and Take a Look at Me - - that is four-line poems – after which, we write as a class our own ocean rhymes OR start children memorizing the lines and coloring the black-line drawings in the book. I prepare the teacher for the class to give an oral presentation. Primary grades. (Written for Kindergarten students) One or more sessions.
ART ACTIVITIES:
- For preschool classes on up – I read my own books and one by a MN writer/mosaic artist. With that book, we follow-up with each student making a simple mosaic of an owl using pre-cut small colored paper pieces.
- After my Old Lady books, students each freehand draw what their own “Monster.”
- I read a manuscript not yet illustrated and have students freehand draw their version of chosen characters.
NATIVE AMERICAN BEAD STORIES – Learning Oral Tradition
I read my Why the Birch Is White and tales from Keepers of the Earth. We study structure and content of folktales. Each student develops a problem, characters, setting, attempts and a solution for the problem. Such as in why the skunk has a white stripe – they create a creation story as to how that occurred. The teacher and I help them with story structure and approve final copies. Students then illustrate their own stories using icons. They then assign a pony bead to each icon so that on a leather thong they will end up with a string of beads to cue them to tell their own story orally. Grade 4 up. (Several sessions).
